Chelmsford is a suburban town next to Lowell, where Route 3 and I-495 meet and Routes 4, 27, 40, 110, and 129 fan out across town. Chelmsford Center is the historic heart, with the town common, the Chelmsford Center Historic District, and Central Square at the junction of Routes 4 and 110.
North Chelmsford, around Vinal Square, grew up as a mill village and now works as a second town center. South, West, and East Chelmsford each keep their own identity too.
The Bruce Freeman Rail Trail runs through town for close to seven miles, right through Central Square, and Heart Pond adds water to the south side. History shows up everywhere.
The Old Chelmsford Garrison House dates to 1691 and now operates as a museum, and remnants of the Middlesex Canal, the early 1800s waterway to Boston, cross the eastern side of town. Chelmsford Public Schools serve the town through Chelmsford High School.
