Lawrence is the city I taught in for years before I sold my first house, and I still know its streets block by block. It is a Merrimack River mill city, and the Great Stone Dam, built across the river in the 1840s, powered the canals and the mills that still line the water.

The Ayer Mill clock tower rises over the riverfront, Lawrence Heritage State Park tells the mill story, and the Lawrence History Center and Essex Art Center keep the city's culture close at hand. Essex Street is the historic downtown shopping district.

North Lawrence and South Lawrence sit on opposite sides of the river, and Tower Hill and Prospect Hill are neighborhoods on the high ground. Den Rock Park, on the Andover line, has wooded trails and rock ledges, and Campagnone Common is the green in the middle of downtown.

Northern Essex Community College has a campus downtown. The MBTA Haverhill Line stops at Lawrence station, and I-495 and Route 114 run through the city.

Lawrence Public Schools serve the city. The housing stock leans multi-family, with two- and three-family homes, mill-building condos and lofts, and single-families mixed through every section.
