Haverhill is where I finished my teaching career, working with beginner language learners in the public schools, so the city feels like home ground to me. It sits on the Merrimack River at the New Hampshire line, with downtown on the north bank and the Bradford section across the river reading more suburban.

Ward Hill, Rocks Village, and the Highlands each have their own character. Downtown along Washington Street and Merrimack Street still shows the brick buildings of the city's shoe-making era, and the riverfront has restaurants and a boardwalk.

Northern Essex Community College has its main campus here. Haverhill Public Schools serve the city.
