Methuen is the Massachusetts city directly across the state line from Salem, NH, with Pelham to the northwest, Haverhill to the northeast, and Lawrence, Andover, and Dracut to the south and west. I-93 and I-495 both cross the city, and Route 213, the Loop Connector, ties them together, with Routes 28, 110, and 113 handling local traffic.
The Spicket River runs through the center, and Forest Lake is the city's recreational pond. Methuen also carries a Gilded Age streak.
The Methuen Memorial Music Hall houses a historic Walcker pipe organ, the Nevins Memorial Library opened in 1883, and the Searles Tenney Nevins Historic District preserves the estates and stonework around them. The Methuen Rail Trail follows the old Boston to Manchester rail line.
