Hampstead is lake country, with Island Pond on its southwest side, Wash Pond near the center, and Angle Pond on the northern border with Sandown. Route 111 crosses the town diagonally, Route 121 runs north and south through the western side as Main Street and Stage Road, and Route 121A passes through East Hampstead.
West Hampstead and East Hampstead each have their own feel, and both still have the look of classic two-lane New England. The Hampstead Meetinghouse, built between about 1749 and 1768, is on the National Register of Historic Places, and a section of the Rockingham Recreational Trail passes through town for walking and riding.
