Salem is where Southern New Hampshire meets the Massachusetts line, with I-93 Exits 1 and 2 both inside town and Route 28, known locally as Broadway, carrying most of the shopping traffic. Tuscan Village, built on the old Rockingham Park racetrack site, added townhomes, apartments, restaurants, and two grocery stores, and the Mall at Rockingham Park sits right beside it.
Away from that busy corridor, North Salem and the Millville section still read like small-town New England, with older capes, colonials, and stone walls. Water shapes the west side of town.
Canobie Lake, home to Canobie Lake Park, is also the principal drinking water supply for Salem, and Arlington Mill Reservoir and World End Pond add more shoreline. The Salem Bike-Ped Corridor follows the old Manchester and Lawrence rail line, and the Field of Dreams park and the Icenter rink fill out the recreation map.
America's Stonehenge, the old stone site in North Salem, draws visitors from all over New England. The Salem School District serves the town, and the Boston Express bus leaves from the Exit 2 terminal.
When I work with Salem sellers, I price against the right pocket of town, because a ranch near Route 28 and a home near Canobie draw very different buyers. For buyers, I run the tax and commute math against Windham and Methuen before the first tour.
