Shadow Lake is a small lake neighborhood in the northwest corner of Salem, on the Windham line, more tucked away than Canobie and without the amusement-park backdrop. The lake sits in a wooded hollow among the hills, and Shadow Lake Road follows the east shore for its full length on the path of the old Route 111.
The town gave the lake its current name in 1913, and summer cottages went up in the groves along the shore in the early 1900s. Many of those camps became year-round homes over the decades, so the lake mixes rebuilt houses with older conversions.
The Salem Town Forest, managed by the Salem Conservation Commission, sits close by with trails through the woods. Shadow Lake homes use the Salem School District and Salem's tax rate, and the lake reaches I-93 at Exit 3 in Windham or Exit 2 in Salem.
